What we do

A business return is only as good as the books underneath it. Give a preparer an unreconciled file and they will produce a return that reflects the file, which is not the same as reflecting the business. That is how a deduction gets missed, and it is also how a figure ends up on a return that nobody could defend two years later.

We prepare business returns for every common structure: sole proprietors reporting inside a personal return, partnerships, S corporations and corporations. Before we prepare one, we check that the books close. If the file needs work, we say so and handle it rather than working around it, because the cleanup is cheaper than the consequences.

The owner's personal return usually depends on the business return, so we prepare both where that applies and keep them consistent. When the two are done by different people, the joins are where the errors live.

What business tax preparation includes

The full scope, in plain terms. Ask about any one of these on its own or all of them together.

Sole proprietor returns

Business income reported inside the owner's return, with the deductions supported by records rather than by memory.

Partnership returns

The entity return and the figures that flow through to each partner, prepared so both sides agree.

S corporation returns

The entity return, the owner side, and the payroll questions that come attached to running one.

Corporation returns

Prepared from closed books, with the reporting and the return built from the same set of numbers.

Books checked before the return

We reconcile and close before preparing. A return built on an unreconciled file is a guess with a signature on it.

Owner returns prepared alongside

The business return and the personal return kept consistent, because one feeds the other.

Filing and acceptance confirmed

Prepared, filed and accepted are three different things. We confirm the acceptance and keep the record.

How it works

We start with last year's return, the current year's books and a short conversation about what changed. New owners, a new location, a first employee, a piece of equipment: each one changes the return, and none of them is visible in a trial balance.

Then the books get closed. Accounts are reconciled, anything unclear gets one direct question, and the year is finalised before a single figure goes onto a return. We prepare it, walk you through what it says in plain language, file it when you approve, and confirm it was accepted. What comes next is the part most owners want: a look at what this return tells us about the current year, while the current year can still be changed.

Who your business return is for

  • Sole proprietors whose business lives inside their personal return
  • Partnerships where each partner needs figures that match the entity
  • S corporations juggling payroll and owner compensation
  • Businesses whose books were never reconciled before a return was filed
  • Owners changing structure and unsure what that does to the filing
  • Anyone who has been handing a preparer a box in March

A return built on an unreconciled file

Ask a preparer to work from a file that has never been reconciled and they will produce a return that faithfully reflects the file. That is the job as handed to them. Whether the file reflects the business is a different question and nobody has been paid to ask it.

This is how a duplicate expense gets deducted once and a real one not at all, and how a figure ends up on a signed return that nobody can explain two years later when somebody asks. Closing the books first is not an upsell before the real work. It is the difference between a return that describes your business and a return that describes your bookkeeping.

Where the business return and the owner's return meet

For most small businesses these two documents are one story told in two places. What the entity reports determines what flows to the owner, and what the owner reports has to match it. When the same firm prepares both, that consistency is a matter of course.

When they are split between two preparers, the join is where the errors live, and neither preparer is in a position to catch them: each one can only see their half and has to trust the other. The cost is not usually a dramatic error. It is a slow accumulation of small inconsistencies that nobody notices until something forces a close reading of both.

Business Tax Preparation FAQs

Which return does my business actually file?

It depends on how the business is set up: a sole proprietor reports inside the personal return, while partnerships, S corporations and corporations each file their own. If you are unsure which of those you are, bring last year's return and we will tell you from it.

My books are not finished. Can you still prepare the return?

We would rather finish them first. Preparing a return from an unreconciled file produces a return that matches the file and not the business. Cleanup and catch-up are part of our bookkeeping work, so it is one conversation rather than two firms.

Can you do my personal return at the same time?

Yes, and for most owners that is the right way round. The business return feeds the personal one, so preparing both together stops the two from disagreeing about the same year.

We have more than one owner. Does that change things?

It changes what each owner receives from the entity return and how their personal returns are prepared. We make sure what the entity reports and what each owner reports line up, which is the point where split preparation usually goes wrong.

How do we hand everything over?

Through the secure client portal, or in person at the office on East Fire Tower Road in Greenville. Start with last year's return and access to the books, and we will tell you what else is needed.
