What we do

A personal return stops being simple the moment anything besides a paycheck turns up in it. Rental property, self-employment on the side, retirement distributions, an investment sale, or a partner who works for themselves: each one adds a form and a judgement, and software that asks yes or no questions does not always ask the right one.

We prepare individual income tax returns for every filing situation. Wages, self-employment income, rental property, investments, retirement income and the combinations of them that real households produce. North Carolina taxes individual income, so the state return is prepared alongside the federal one and the two are checked against each other rather than filed and hoped for.

If tax was not withheld on part of your income, we also work out what should go in as quarterly estimated payments, which is the single most common reason a household that thought it was fine gets a bill it was not expecting.

What individual income tax return preparation includes

The full scope, in plain terms. Ask about any one of these on its own or all of them together.

Federal and North Carolina returns

Both prepared together. North Carolina has a state individual income tax, so the state side is real work, not an afterthought.

Wage and salary income

The straightforward part, done properly, including the withholding question of whether your W-4 is set where it should be.

Self-employment and side income

Income nobody withheld tax on, with the deductions that belong to it and the record-keeping that supports them.

Rental property income

Rent, expenses and the treatment of what you spent on the property, handled as part of the same return.

Investment and retirement income

Sales, distributions and the paperwork that arrives for them, read properly rather than typed in and trusted.

Quarterly estimated payments

What to send through the year when nothing is being withheld, so April is a filing rather than a bill.

IRS correspondence support

A letter goes to us instead of sitting on your kitchen table. We read it, tell you what it wants, and respond for you.

How it works

Start by sending last year's return and this year's documents through the secure client portal, or bring them in to the office on East Fire Tower Road. Last year's return matters more than people expect, because it shows what your situation looked like before anything changed and it catches items that would otherwise be forgotten.

We prepare the return, then go back to you with questions rather than assumptions. Anything unclear gets asked once, clearly. When it is ready we walk you through it in plain terms so you know what it says before you sign it, file it once you approve, and confirm the acceptance. Then we talk about next year: whether withholding needs adjusting, whether estimates need to start, and what to keep track of.

Who your personal return is for

  • Households with a paycheck on one side and self-employment on the other
  • People who own a rental property in Pitt County or beyond it
  • Anyone who started taking retirement income this year
  • Self-employed people who should be making quarterly payments and are not
  • People whose software return has got harder every year
  • Anyone holding an IRS letter they do not understand

Software asks questions. It does not ask follow-ups

Consumer tax software is genuinely good at a return with a W-2 and a standard deduction. What it cannot do is notice that your answer to one question contradicts your answer to another, or ask the question that was not on the list because your situation is not the common one.

The returns that go wrong are rarely the complicated ones prepared carefully. They are the moderately complicated ones prepared confidently: a first year of self-employment, a property that was rented for part of a year, a retirement distribution that was partly rolled over. Each of those has a right treatment and an obvious wrong one, and the wrong one does not produce an error message.

The bill that arrives because nothing was withheld

An employer withholds tax from every paycheck, so by April the year is largely settled. Income from self-employment, a rental or investments arrives whole, and nothing is set aside from it unless the person receiving it sets it aside.

That is the mechanism behind almost every unexpected personal tax bill we see described. The household did not spend recklessly and did not do anything wrong. It received money that looked like income it could use and was in fact income it partly owed. The fix is arithmetic done early: work out what the untaxed portion actually generates, and send it in through the year rather than discovering the total after the year has closed.

Individual Income Tax Return Preparation FAQs

What do I need to send you?

Last year's return, the tax documents that arrived for this year, and a note about anything that changed. If you had self-employment or rental income, add the records behind it. If you are missing something, send what you have and we will tell you what is still needed.

I have a W-2 and a small side business. Which return is that?

One return, with the business reported inside it, unless the business is set up as its own entity. Either way we prepare the whole picture rather than the employment half. That combination is also the one where estimated payments usually need to start.

Do you prepare the North Carolina return as well as the federal one?

Yes, both together. North Carolina taxes individual income, so the state return is a real part of the work and not a copy of the federal one.

I got a letter from the IRS. What should I do with it?

Send it to us through the portal or bring it in, and do not ignore it. We read it, explain what it is actually asking for, and respond on your behalf. Most letters are narrower than they look.

Can you do this if I do not live in Greenville?

Yes. Documents move through the secure client portal and the conversation happens by phone, so where you live does not change the work. Call (252) 916-3278, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
