What we do
By the time a return is being prepared, the year is over and almost everything is fixed. Planning is the work that happens before that, while the decisions are still in front of you.
We look forward instead of back. What the business is likely to earn, what that means for the tax bill, and which moves are worth making before the year closes. That covers how the business is structured, how the owner is paid, when equipment gets bought, how retirement contributions are timed, and whether the quarterly payments are anywhere near the right number.
North Carolina has its own rules on top of the federal ones, and a business operating across county and state lines picks up obligations that are easy to miss until a notice arrives. Planning is also how you avoid becoming a tax resolution client.
What tax planning includes
The full scope, in plain terms. Ask about any one of these on its own or all of them together.
Strategic tax planning
A forward look at the year, revisited as the numbers change, so decisions get made while they can still affect the outcome.
Year-end projections
An estimate of where the bill is heading before December, while there is still time to act on it.
Quarterly estimated taxes
Estimates calculated from your real numbers rather than last year's, so you are neither underpaying into a penalty nor lending the government money.
Entity structure review
Whether how the business is set up still fits what it has become. The right answer at the start is often the wrong answer three years later.
Owner compensation planning
How the owner takes money out of the business, and what each route costs in tax.
Timing of purchases and deductions
Equipment, vehicles and larger expenses land differently depending on when they happen and how they are treated.
Retirement contribution planning
Which plans a business of your size can use, and what contributing does to the current year.
North Carolina state planning
State obligations sit on top of the federal ones, and they do not always move together.
How it works
Planning starts with the same thing every time: real, current numbers. If the books are behind, planning is guesswork, so that gets fixed first.
From there we build a picture of where the year is heading and put a projected number in front of you well before it is due. Then we go through what can still be changed, what each option is worth, and what it costs you in flexibility or cash to do it. You decide, and we handle the filings that follow.
We revisit it as the year moves, because a plan built on January's numbers is not much use to a business that had a very different August.

Tax Planning FAQs
What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?
Preparation reports what already happened. Planning happens while you can still change it. By the time a return is being prepared the year is closed and almost every decision is locked, which is why a good preparer can find deductions but cannot change the year.
When should tax planning happen?
Through the year, with a serious look before the year ends. A projection in the autumn still leaves room to act. A conversation in March is a conversation about a number that is already fixed.
Should my business be an S corporation?
Sometimes, and it depends on what the business actually earns and how much work the extra compliance is worth. It is a real question with a real answer for your numbers, not a rule that applies to everyone, and the right answer changes as the business grows.
My quarterly payments are just last year's number divided by four. Is that a problem?
It can be both ways. If the business grew, you are heading for a bill and possibly a penalty. If it shrank, you have handed over money you did not owe and will wait to get it back. Either way the estimate should follow this year's numbers.
Do you handle North Carolina state planning as well as federal?
Yes. State rules sit on top of the federal ones and do not always move in the same direction, and a business working across county or state lines can pick up obligations it did not expect.
Do I need clean books before you can plan?
Yes, and that is not a sales line. Planning on numbers that are months behind produces a projection nobody should act on. If the books need catching up we say so and deal with that first.
